This hit the paper today in the A.

Two police officers were shot Tuesday morning while questioning three people in an area of southwest Atlanta that has suffered a rash of burglaries, police said.

The officers returned fire, killing the man who shot them and wounding a second man, department officials said.

One officer was shot in the face and rushed to Grady Memorial Hospital. The other officer was hit in the chest but was wearing a bulletproof vest.

"Neither of the officers have any life threatening problems," Dr. Jeffrey Salomone told reporters at Grady. "They're still being evaluated. I'm grateful to have good news to report to you."

Their names were not immediately released.

The shootings happened when the two officers, assigned to the Zone 4 precinct, were on patrol as part of an effort to curb the burglary problem.

They saw two men and a woman sitting outside a house at 976 Cascade Road southwest and attempted to question them, Atlanta Police Chief Richard Pennington said at a press conference at Grady.

Pennington said the officers asked the young people to approach and repeatedly ordered them to take their hands out of their pockets.

One of the men pulled out an automatic weapon and fired at the officers, striking both, Pennington said. The officers returned fire and killed the gunman and wounded the other man, he added.

The wounded man and the young woman are in custody.

The identity of the three people weren't immediately released.

Pennington said police are still investigating why the were in front of the house.

Eric Pope saw the incident unfold about 11 a.m. from his house nearby.

He said one of the men fired at the officers as the trio attempted to run away.

Yolanda Jackson, who was campaigning in the area for a sheriff's candidate, said she was about 200 yards away when she heard "more than four shots" fired.

"Everybody ran for cover," she said.

Tuesday's shooting was the third high-profile crime for the Cascade Road corridor in as two weeks.

Early Sunday, someone shot a convenience store clerk on Cascade Road in southwest Atlanta during a dispute about a T-shirt. The clerk died. The gunman remains at large.

On the evening of July 2, a man walked into a Starbucks on Cascade near I-285 and shot two men, former Atlanta city attorney Clifford Hardwick, 56, and Timothy Strayhorn, 43, according to Fulton County police.

Hardwick had serious injuries. Strayhorn was less seriously hurt.

That gunman remains at large.

Cascade Road is a busy commercial corridor stretching from unincorporated southwest Fulton County to inner-city Atlanta. The Starbucks shooting took place in a busy stretch of Cascade that features a Publix shopping center, bank branches and mid-level chain restaurants. The other two shootings happened in a more residential stretch of the road closer to downtown Atlanta.

Since the results are the result of weighted crime stats it’s true you might come to different conclusions about safe and dangerous, and of course safety and danger are not just a function of crime. I think I’d take a slight crime boost if it meant a big reduction in dirtiness and pollution, though usually most of the bad stuff goes together. I was amazed at how Philadelphia was so much nastier in terms of downtown cleanliness than the Amish country around Lancaster, PA and I’m always surprised in San Jose and Silicon Valley how much dirtier and harsher the cityscape is compared to the nearby suburbs, which are generally “too tidy” for me. Here in rural Oregon you kind of feel cozy when you see dozens of dirty lawn flamingos in the yard and 14 used cars in somebody’s driveway.
